I want to buy a set of watercolor paints. What is the difference between "Cotman" and "Artist" grade paints?
Cottman is the student grade of Windsor & Newton watercolor, they also make artist grade (AWC)
The main difference between any artist grade paint and a student grade is the amount of pigment in the paint.
A student grade can have as little as 10 percent pigment by volume and some of the more expensive artist paints have 70 percent or more pigment. It is usually the same pigment so it will look the same initially, but will tend to fade out faster over time also student grade will tend to have more "hues" or "lakes" meaning the pigment has been stretched by adding a neutral substance to increase its volume. The carrier or base, is usually the same for both types and they will work with each other. This definition applies to watercolor, oil, acrylic, paints as well as pastells, colored pencils and so on.
In the art world price is usually a good indicator of quality. If you are serious buy the best you can afford even if it means you have to make your own tones and shades using primary and secondary colors. Good brands will work with each other and cost about the same so try some single tubes for basic colors and build your palette as you go along. Half pans (cakes) are hard to find in replacements and tube paints can be reconstituted once they dry out so most watercolorists use tubes.
Other excellent brands (most will also make a student grade) are Holbein, Grumbacher, Graham, Senellier, and Old Holland.
