when did they start using pencil graphite instead of lead?
One reason is for security purposes. You probably heard of lead poisoning, and with all children using pencils, you get some who bite their pencils and poisoned. Although it is still not a good idea to eat the graphite, it is supposed to be safer. In addition, in the 1500s, a large amount of graphite was found in England, and was found to be easily shaped into sticks and others, and became the primary means of lining pencil from there.
