Describe Saturday snack when you were a child?
Mom was cooking all day, making all the food for next week and my sister and I would help her by the time everything was bagged in the freezer / Tupperware and cleaned the kitchen, it would about four O Clock. Tea was an hour or two later and was a DIY kit. Basically, you went into the kitchen and helped you that you believed, generally, sandwiches, cakes, scones, cakes rock, cookies ... mostly we ate what we had just cooked, then we would sit and watch the football scores come in. We bairns would sit quietly and let Dad check out the coupon pool because we knew Wed as special Doctor Who and Mom, Thurs generation came later. Ahhh, happy days. ohh yeah, the fight and snooker. Papa "buy" that we let alone in teaching us to choose our favorites. Mine were Big Daddy and Hurricane Higgins.
If we had an egg, my mother would make a cake on the gas stove radiation. For tea there was always a clean, starched white damask cloth on the table. Bread and butter if there was one left ration of butter (I think it was 2 oz a week for an adult) - if it was Marg, we could have bread and butter with watercress sometimes (I made in sandwiches), and a slice of cake. Ready-sliced bread was not invented then, by the way. Rarely my aunt who worked at the Bristol Aeroplane Company would somehow be "found" frozen cakes - probably on the black market - we never asked (Now known as fondant fancies) and we could have one of these. Big pot of tea - but only half a teaspoon of sugar because of rationing. Sometimes, if Mom was lucky to get a little sugar over the summer that we could have homemade blackberry jam on the bread (but no butter not allowed). No problems with obesity during the war years.
