can i put my pots in the microwave?
I make ceramic pots, plates and cups. I'm wondering if I can use them to microwave hot chocolate or tea. Can I also eat out of them? A friend of mine said that there are chemicals on them when I fire them in the kiln and I shouldn't use them for anything except decoration. Could use some clarifying...
It depends on the glazing used on the ceramics. Normally ceramics are fine in the microwave if they have a glazing that stops moisture from being absorbed in the ceramic. But some glazings have metals in them (like iron oxides, blue cobalts and lead yellows and oranges) and metals reflect microwaves which show up as sparks in your microwave and if those microwaves get redirected back to your wave generator they could destroy it.
Metals aren't harmful in themselves but they don't absorb microwaves and they just send the waves elsewhere.
So to answer your question, just find out what your glazings are made of, and as long as they don't have metal pigments you are fine
