Artists? Question about using Liquin?
Hey there, thanks for looking. I've not used liquin before, I'm about to do so to make it look like shading on an oil painting I've done on a canvas board. I'm not sure how to use it with paint, here's what a blog said:
'As it's quite a large area to paint, I first cover the area with a very thin coat of linseed oil, or more recently I have been using Liquin, then wipe most of it off with a sheet of kitchen tissue. This allows the paint to slip and flow much easier on the board. The soil was blocked in using Burnt Sienna, Naples Yellow and White with a big synthetic brush. Then I used a fan brush to blend the area together.'
By this does the artist mean I should apply the liquin and the paints in a mix together at the same time, apply the paint before the liquin or the liquin before the paint?

What that blog post is describing is a process called "painting into a couch."
"An oily or resinous medium can also be spread thinly onto the surface of the painting before applying paint (this is referred to as painting into a “couch” of medium). Wipe with a cloth or rub it in with the palm of your hand to get it as thin as you can. Don’t apply medium to areas where you will not be painting this session, since oil on the surface can eventually result in excessive yellowing. The couch method has the effect of lubricating the surface (which can make precise detail work easier) and reducing “chatter” (i.e., dragging and streaking of paint strokes). It also improves adhesion between layers, especially if the medium contains a balsam."
