How can I determine the number of pages on a Web site?
Im researching a variety of Web sites and I'm trying to get the number of pages on a Web site. Any ideas how I can get this? It doesn't work checking Google or the other search engines as all pages might not be indexed. Thanks so much for any help!
I received a response but it didn't answer the question. I'll rephrase: I realize a Web site can have a lot of pages but I'm trying to determine if there is any software or anything where I can point it at a Web site and it will return the number of pages on that site.
There is software that will copy a website, and let you know how many pages it copied. This won't work for huge sites, since you actually have to copy the site onto your harddrive - winHTTrack Website Copier is a free to try piece of software that does just that. It's a hoaky way of doing it, but it should work. Once you have copied the site onto your local hard drive, you can right click onto the folder to see the properties. Don't forget to subract the content of the images folder.
Another way of trying this is getting software that creates a sitemap of the website. There is a firefox extension called "autositemap" which you could install and then count the pages listed in the site map. dowload from https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=1719&application=firefox
a third way would be to enter a search word that you know is in all the pages. For example, if i enter "site:www.csdf.org children" in Google, I get "Results 1 - 10 of about 36 from www.csdf.org for children" showing that there are likely 36 pages on the Children's Skin Disease Foundation website. - since the word children is in the name I was confident that it would be found on all the pages in the website. This will only work for pages that have been scanned by google.
I did the same test with "site:www.lynnsiendesigns.com sien" and "site:www.cyclone.com cyclone" and got accurate results (I am the webmaster for all three, so I know that they are about right)
You will have to decide what consitutes a page. Do pop-ups count?
