Do I need to be able to draw freehand to be able to pursue a career in 3d digital modeling?
I am considering a change in studies but i am not very good at drawing. I can sketch but only to the level of understanding objects.
Really what i'm saying is i cant draw or paint but i can do basics on 3d software mainly auto CAD due to my studies in civil engineering at university.
Is it worth my while to pursue a career when i really am not a freehand artist.
This sounds like this is potentially a major life decision for you, because it sounds like you might be switching careers. So this is probably obvious, but don't base your decision entirely on what I say, but I'll definitely give you advice.
As for art skill, it can depend on where you go to school. Because it is an art program, they will most likely ask for a portfolio. Not necessarily though. When I submitted my portfolio they also requested that we had experience in life art drawing so we would know and understand proper proporitons.
This most likely is not needed though. When I was in school there were a few classmates that had minimal traditional art skills. Sometimes it's important just to learn fundamentals of traditional because sometimes the things you learn in traditional art are transferrable into 3D art. But I don't think they're completely necessary. We never had to draw or paint anything (except in our 2D animation course which we had to take to learn fundamentals of animation) But even then we weren't judged on our artistic talent, we were judged on animation concepts. Although 3D is an art, it is also very technical and much easier to be learned as a skill when compared to traditional art, so you should definitely be capable of it, and most schools wouldn't turn you away.
Also, 3D modeling is a very hard career to get into right now, so you may want to keep that in mind, but also, don't let that discourage you... lol, I hope I'm not giving too much conflicting information, and hopefully something I said was useful. I know the students in my class that couldn't really draw were still able to make some amazing 3D models.
