why some oil paint are so thin?
I was using & Newton Artist Oil Winsor pain for 2 years. My question is why some of the color out of the tube is thick enough to work with Naples Yellow, Sienna, Sienna Burn, but some of them especially using red as Quinacridone Red or Permanent Rose are verry thin. ?
I love this question ... the answer is cooked to your question effectively. Some colors come out with a consistency different from others because of the pigments themselves. Now, this is not 100% of the response, but it is the very first question that makes the paint will realize. Some pigments are more absorbent, less certain, and some need to be well secure more land than others, some sticky when the soil is too thin, some are turning to hard dough. The reality is that each pigment has its qualities clean and paint-making is very difficult to follow. This brings you to the destruction of a popular myth among oil painters: the best paintings are just oil and pigment. And some paint manufacturers make some very pretentious (and charge high prices) on the idea they are like the old masters paintings. Pure pigment and oil. What is a load of crap. Yes, I am sure that in the early days some painters worked with anything other than oil and pigments ... but may have mainly been because it was all they had or what they knew. Just as the artists understood how to make paint pigments and oil to help they also found (Like you) that some paintings remain runny, others thick. Then when they started working, some dry very fast and some slow. Some pigments will be in oil, then back. So, choosing any artist or paintmaker has is whether they want to accept inconsistent pigments to give them, or change their formula to make paint behave more consistently. This becomes a very personal thing. Some people love the romance of color doing their thing, some artists can not work around a color being thicker than the past and the next dripping their webs ... or they do not have the patience to wait for some colors to dry so they can build on top of them, or that some colors always seem fat, and other lean. I can not speak for Paints W & N, they are widely available but may not be the best. The problem you may be a reflection of their philosophy on painting, maybe they need a load of some pigment paints and let be as thin or thick as they appear to be, or they crush them all to a certain specification that is too thin for some ... I do not know not. What I know is that any company that makes a quality paint artist must make choices about how their paint will behave. Companies that stick with the term "pure oil and pigment" concept accept this inconsistency (most are located, by the way, there are very few paintings who do not have some kind of additives). Most manufacturers will choose to take their paintings work in a compromise which they hope will appeal artsist. They can paint thin thick beeswax, or slow drying paint dry might get some use different oils (Most are linen, but you will see cotton, walnuts, pine oils) to see how they color effect, or drying. Of course, everything you move will add some pigment and oil, and nobody wants to admit they are under the highest pigment content (hence the tendency of certain businesses to lie about their use of additives). Ultimately, the fact that you ask this question could be an indication of your maturity or experience growing as a painter. Most painters have painted from a few different brands on their palette. They could, like most of the colors of a company, but tend to find some specific colors from other brands they prefer for their main brand. W & N is a mark handy, since you can find it at Michaels and many other places. There are certainly worse brands out there, but really quality paints premium are generally made by small companies that do not have the volume of distribution or sale to be in all stores that W & N is But you need to find some of these brands and look at the colors that are not working for you in W & N Here are some suggestions: Old Holland, Williamsburg, Blockx, Schmincke not as good as, maybe as good (in some cases) that W & N are Gamblin, DaVinci, Holbein Of course, I mention these brands at my own risk and peril. Another artist you say I'm totally full of shit and that they are the worst brands ... but it proves my point of view that painting is personal. Open a few tubes and find what works for you, in other words, listen what I say for you to ignore me completely.
