Do painters/artists have agents?
I was wondering how does a painting end up from a painter's studio to somebody else's collection, etc.
Do they have agents/ some kind of 'art publishing house' like novelists/screenwriters?
Can one submit their art somewhere (contests, website, whatever) for consideration to be purchased?
What exactly does an art dealer do?

I can't afford the fees charged by most agents listed in 'The Writers and Artists Yearbook', so when I felt that I had a viable portfolio, I started to approach various galleries [ mainly small, privately- run] to ask if they would consider showing my work. At first, I could only get three or four works shown each season, but as time went by, I was selling more work, so it became easier to get gallery owners interested in taking me on. Before long, I was offered a 2- man show, and ultimately, some 1- man exhibitions. A big breakthrough for me was when I was successful in getting a 1- man show at one of the main, council- run galleries, which was very popular with the visiting public. All this has taken 14 years of constant effort and energy, but what it shows more than anything is, don't give up on yourself!
