Why the pipe lines should be laid in straight line?
this is related to water supply engineering.
The straight line is prefered because then the only loss is;
Friction losses (Darcy-Weisbach) and if the line has sudden curves or sudden expansions. The head loss is the carnot loss.
Extremely slowly travelling water will have no issues with either losses, however, it is still preferred to go straight.
Secondly, straight lines require less pipeline usually.
