why large predators are rare?
Ratio is one thing. If there are too many predators and they eat all the prey, predators and then die. It reached the extreme with large predators because they are so desperate to eat. The classic study was done Scandinavia several years ago with arctic foxes and lemmings (Because basically all the fox was eating lemmings and relatively few other predators were around). It was found that the population of lemmings strengthened, the fox population (with a slight time lag). This continued until there were so many foxes to harass the population of lemmings lemmings have collapsed, causing many foxes to starve and bring people back the low level again. This predator prey base relations / exists in all environments even though it is often complicated by the Competing predators and prey rival. The need to have a large number of prey to maintain a viable population means more predators that eat most predators tend to be territorial in nature and is in direct most of their lives alone or in relatively small groups isolated from each other. The principle base is the same everywhere - it requires a large number of prey animals to maintain a relatively small number of predators. The ratios are so paleantologists established that claim to be able to calculate how many herbivorous dinosaurs, there was in a given area by counting the number of skeletons of predators they find.
