How do they make the designs in the grass on MLB fields?
I have always been curious as to how they get the designs on the field so perfect. Is it done with a large stencil?
The mowers that are used to make designs (stripes) on sports fields are known as "Reel" mowers, which have a steel "roller" horizontally laid across the "back" of the cutting blades. Some mowers have one in the front as well. By flattening down the mowed grass with this roller, you get a lighter and darker pattern and it's all according to which way the light is angled, on how you perceive the shading. Golf courses as well, use these types of mowing equipment to make checkerboard patterns as well as diamond shapes on the putting greens and fairway's.

How do the stripes get onto the field?
Groundskeepers say it's simple: A roller — 21 inches wide for the infield and 6 feet wide for the outfield — is attached behind a mower reel. It rolls over the grass so the color of the blades change tone when the sun hits at different angles. The grass is never cut to different heights nor is it colored. It's all in the bending.
