Painting wood paneling?
We are considering painting a living room with wood paneling. It is a smooth wood paneling with molding that creates squares over the entire wall (wainscoting?). It is does not have grooves. Was wondering if anyone has ever seen this type of paneling painted? Would it look odd? Would it be better to remove the paneling? Can we or should we remove the molding and then can we add texture to the wall and paint over it?

The molding on paneling usually covers joints. Best to leave it. Unless you are ready to sheet rock, best not to remove the paneling. Newer houses built with paneling will have just studs underneath. Paneling was used a lot in older houses where the old plaster was in need of serious repair or replacement.
Panelings have a slick hard to adhere to surface so textures made of joint compound will have a difficult time sticking long term. I have used joint compound over a good primer to seal joints after removing molding, but must be primed again before painting. I wasn't wholly pleased with the out come of that. That's why I think it's best to leave the molding.
I have not seen this type of paneling other than really old and made of really nice quality real wood. If it just a cheap modern imitation consider painting the molding a different color for accent. With out seeing the paneling it's hard to tell it that's a good idea or not. You be the judge.
To paint paneling wipe down each section with a painters alcohol just prior to painting. Or use an alcohol based primer.
Otherwise prime with oil based. The latex tends to not adhere as well to the paneling.
If you want to add texture try using a thick napped roller when painting the finish coat. It will give it a little without adding a lot of weight that pulls on the adhesion the paint to paneling.
